iPhone Location Privacy - How to Control Who Knows Where You Are
A practical checklist for locking down your iPhone's location - app permissions, Significant Locations, photo metadata, Find My sharing - plus when a location changer helps.

Your iPhone knows where you are almost all the time, and dozens of apps would like to know too. The good news is iOS gives you a lot of control. Here's a checklist, from quick wins to more advanced options.
1. Review which apps can see your location
Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services. Go through the list and ask, for each app: does it really need this?
- Never - for apps that have no reason to know.
- Ask Next Time Or When I Share - a good default; the app asks each time.
- While Using the App - for maps, delivery and ride-hailing.
- Always - very few apps need this. Be suspicious.
2. Turn off Precise Location where it isn't needed
In the same screen, tap an app and switch off Precise Location. The app then gets an area of a few kilometres rather than your exact address. Weather, news and shopping apps work fine like this.
3. Check Significant Locations
Location Services → System Services → Significant Locations. Your iPhone keeps an encrypted history of places you visit often, used for suggestions. You can view it, clear the history, or switch it off.
4. Strip location from photos
Photos record where they were taken. When sharing, tap Options at the top of the share sheet and turn off Location. To stop recording it at all: Location Services → Camera → Never.
5. Audit Find My and location sharing
Find My → People shows who can see your location. Remove anyone who no longer should. In Settings → [your name] → Find My, you can also turn off Share My Location entirely.
6. Use Safety Check
Settings → Privacy & Security → Safety Check reviews everyone and every app you share with in one place, and lets you stop sharing everything at once. It's designed for people who need to cut off access quickly.
7. When a location changer helps
Sometimes hiding your location isn't enough - an app refuses to work without one, or you'd rather it saw somewhere general than your home. A location changer like Mirrage lets you choose what your iPhone reports, then switch back to your real location with one tap.
Two important caveats:
- While a location is simulated, everyone you share with sees it too, including Find My.
- Always switch back before relying on your location for safety or in an emergency.
FAQ
How do I stop apps tracking my location on iPhone?
Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services: set apps to Never or Ask Next Time, and turn off Precise Location for apps that only need a rough area.
Can someone see my location without me knowing?
Only if you're sharing it - through Find My, an app with location permission, or a shared photo. Safety Check shows everything you share in one place.
Does turning off Location Services stop Find My?
Turning off Location Services stops your phone sharing its location with Find My and apps. Emergency calls can still use your location where the law requires it.
