Since iOS 16, iPhones have a setting called Developer Mode. Apps that aren't from the App Store - including location tools like Mirrage - need it switched on. Here's what it is, whether it's safe, and how to find it.
What Developer Mode does
Developer Mode lets your iPhone run apps that a developer installed directly, and lets developer tools use features like location simulation, debugging and performance tools. Apple added the switch so these features are off by default and you have to choose to turn them on.
It doesn't:
- jailbreak your phone,
- turn off security updates,
- give apps access to your data,
- change anything about App Store apps.
Is Developer Mode safe?
For normal use, yes. It's an official Apple setting used by every iOS developer. The main thing it changes is that apps installed outside the App Store are allowed to run, so only install apps you trust. You can switch it off at any time.
How to turn on Developer Mode
- Open Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to the very bottom and tap Developer Mode.
- Turn it on and tap Restart.
- After the restart, unlock your iPhone and tap Turn On to confirm.
Why is Developer Mode missing?
The switch is hidden until your iPhone needs it - usually until a developer app is installed or a computer asks for it. If you can't see it:
- Install the developer app first (for Mirrage, Mirrage Setup does this for you).
- Close and reopen Settings.
- Restart your iPhone.
Mirrage Setup goes further: when it reaches this step it makes the switch appear automatically, and on iPhones without a passcode it can turn it on for you. Full details in our Developer Mode troubleshooting guide.
How to turn Developer Mode off
Go back to Settings → Privacy & Security → Developer Mode, switch it off and restart. Apps that depend on it will stop opening until you turn it back on.
FAQ
Does Developer Mode void my warranty?
No. It's a built-in Apple setting, not a modification.
Does Developer Mode drain the battery?
No. Having it on doesn't run anything by itself.
Why does my iPhone restart when I turn on Developer Mode?
Apple requires a restart so the change can't be made silently. After the restart you confirm it once.
Do I need Developer Mode to change my location?
For any tool that changes GPS without a jailbreak, yes - location simulation is a developer feature.
