Does iPhone GPS Work Without Internet? Offline Location Explained

Yes - your iPhone's GPS works with no mobile data or Wi-Fi. Here's what still works offline, what doesn't, and how to download maps before you lose signal.

Yes. The GPS chip in your iPhone listens to satellites directly, so it can find your position with no mobile data, no Wi-Fi and even in Airplane Mode. What you lose without internet is the map around the blue dot, live traffic and search - unless you download them first.

Here's how iPhone location works offline, why it's sometimes slower to lock on, and how to set your phone up before a trip.

How your iPhone works out where it is

Your iPhone blends several sources to place the blue dot:

  • Satellites (GPS and other systems) - the main source outdoors. Free to receive and needs no internet at all.
  • Wi-Fi networks nearby - iOS recognises networks around you to improve accuracy, especially indoors.
  • Mobile masts - a rough position from the towers your phone can see.
  • Motion sensors - the compass, accelerometer and gyroscope help smooth your position between fixes.

Internet helps in one specific way: your iPhone can download satellite position data to get a fix faster. This is often called assisted GPS. Without it, the phone has to work that out from the satellites themselves, which can take longer.

What works without internet

  • Your position. The blue dot still moves in Maps, Compass still shows your coordinates, and fitness apps still record your route.
  • Downloaded maps. If you saved an area beforehand, you can see streets, search places in it and get directions.
  • Apps that record location. Running, cycling and hiking apps log GPS points and sync them later.

What doesn't work without internet

  • Maps you haven't downloaded. The dot appears on a blank or blurry background.
  • Live traffic and transit updates.
  • Searching for places outside your downloaded areas.
  • Sharing your location with friends or Find My, until you reconnect.

Does GPS work in Airplane Mode?

Yes. Airplane Mode turns off the mobile radio, and usually Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but Location Services can stay on. Open Maps in Airplane Mode outdoors and you'll still see your position. This is handy abroad to avoid roaming charges, or on a long walk to save battery.

On a plane, your iPhone may struggle to get a fix through the windows, and the airline's rules on device use still apply.

How to download maps on iPhone before you go

Apple Maps can save areas for offline use:

  1. Open Maps and tap your profile picture or initials next to the search bar.
  2. Tap Offline Maps, then Download New Map.
  3. Search for a place or adjust the box to cover the area you need, then tap Download.

Google Maps works in a similar way:

  1. Tap your profile picture, then Offline maps.
  2. Tap Select your own map, frame the area and tap Download.

Download over Wi-Fi - larger areas can take a fair bit of storage.

Tips for a faster fix offline

  1. Open Maps while you still have signal. Let the phone lock on before you lose coverage.
  2. Get a clear view of the sky. Tall buildings, tunnels and dense trees slow things down.
  3. Give it a minute. A first fix without assisted data can take longer than usual.
  4. Check Precise Location is on for the app in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services.

Do all iPhones and iPads have GPS?

Every iPhone does. iPads are different: only the Wi-Fi + Cellular models have a GPS receiver. A Wi-Fi-only iPad estimates its position from nearby networks, so it can't find you offline.

Planning a trip with Mirrage

If you're planning a route somewhere new, it can help to see how your apps behave there before you travel. Mirrage changes the location your iPhone reports, so you can:

  1. Search for a destination and tap Teleport here to check what local apps and features show for that area.
  2. Use Journeys to Walk, Jog, Cycle or Drive a route on real roads and see how it plays out in your apps.
  3. Import a GPX route from Strava, Garmin or Komoot via Settings → Import a GPX route to preview a planned hike or ride - see how to use a GPX file on iPhone.

Tap Stop and your real location returns instantly. Setup takes about five minutes once with a Mac or Windows PC - get the free setup app from the download page. For the bigger picture, see how to change your iPhone location without jailbreaking.

FAQ

Does iPhone GPS work without mobile data?

Yes. The GPS receiver picks up satellite signals directly and needs no data. Without internet you'll only see the map if you downloaded that area beforehand.

Can I use Apple Maps offline on iPhone?

Yes. In Maps, tap your profile picture, choose Offline Maps, then Download New Map and pick the area. You can then view, search and get directions within that area without a connection.

Why is my iPhone GPS slow without internet?

With a connection, your iPhone downloads satellite data to get a fix quickly. Without it, the phone has to gather that from the satellites, which can take longer. Head outdoors with a clear view of the sky and give it a minute.

Does GPS work in Airplane Mode on iPhone?

Yes. Airplane Mode switches off mobile signal, but Location Services can still use GPS. Your position shows in Maps, though the map itself needs to be downloaded in advance.
